CALCULATIONS METHODS AND STEPS TO REDUCE GRID ENERGY LOSSES
RTP-3 Software package designed to calculate, analyze and set standards for process-related power losses in electric power networks
RTP 3 features:
estimates for grids rated 6(10)-220 kV;
estimates for kV grids rated 0,4;
developing balances for sections of power grids rated 0,38-220 kV.

RTP-3 software package is designed to calculate operation mode parameters, process-related capacity and power losses, standard power losses in 0.38-220 kV power grids, as well as estimate allowable and actual discrepancies and unaccounted-for power balances within the grid networks.
RTP 3 is one of the best-known commercial software packages in Russia approved by the Ministry of Energy and certified by the National Committee for Standards (Gosstandart). It has been recognized as a superior quality product by the diploma awarded by the Energy Conservation Expo and a Grand Prix prize titled “European Quality” in Geneva.
Key advantages offered by RTP-3 are as follows:
- A modern, convenient, intuitively accessible interface that allows for substantial reduction in labor costs related to preparation and network calculations;
- The use of different methods to calculate allowable power losses depending on available calculation data;
- Calculations for minimization of capacity and power losses in open-circuit networks of 6(10) kV, 35 kV, 10 kV after replacing wires, cables and power transformers, installation of static reactive compensator batteries and unbundling of electric networks;
- Calculations of energy losses in auxiliary equipment, such as metering units (metering current and voltage transformers, direct connection meters, valve-type arresters, shunting reactors, synchronized compensators, excess voltage suppressors, connecting devices for high-frequency communication, connecting wire and substation buses);
- Calculation of electric power discrepancies in each line based on step-down transformer meter readings and acceptable error margins of metering devices;
- Generation of reporting matrixes per effective requirements of Russia’s Ministry of Energy (i.e. substantiating matrixes formatted as active simulation per the Instruction);
- Quick search of the circuits through the table of contents formatted as a hierarchical tree;
- Input and calculation feature for networks with several nominal voltage readings;
- Calculation of power losses within the concerned network during any given period;
- Assignment of end users to 0.4 kV network nodes with variable assigned load values;
- Input of load values at the nodes, transformers and end users through the same information window;
- The ability to use preset or calculated power consumption numbers at distribution transformers as baseline data for calculations of 0.38 kV grid;
- The use of editable reference resources for development of design circuits;
- Calculations of load capacity and power losses in distribution transformers 6(10)/0.4 kV adjusted for asymmetrical phase loading;
- Calculation of power losses in cable line insulation 6(10)-220 kV adjusted for cable design life;
- Flexible editing mode;
- Parameters of design circuits and its components features are viewable in any mode;
- The ability to switch between circuits without the need to edit through current split points, and analysis of system consequences of switching;
- The ability to perform calculations for each separate circuit or a group of circuits with predetermined baseline data;
- The ability to use Microsoft Excel for input of current, voltage, power consumption etc. values;
- Ownership record of power lines and transformers during calculations of acceptable capacity and electricity losses;
- The ability to view calculation results not only in the company’s own grid lines, but also in subscriber lines and transformers, as well as their aggregated values;
- Easy-to-read, highly graphic calculation results;
- Display of resulting values of current in grid branches, voltage readings in grid notes, transformer current loads, short circuit currents, electricity flow and grid component resistance in the grid diagram;
- Archivation of results in consolidated matrix summaries where they can be aggregated by power supply centers, grid sections and grid companies as a whole;
- Archivation of auxiliary information in aggregated matrix summaries, including power loss values, transformer load ratios and list of equipment covered by calculations (number and length of grid lines, number and installed capacity of transformers);
- Archivation of all calculation results (by one preset grid line or aggregate matrixes) in standard MS Office applications (Excel);
- Verification of calculation results and baseline values;
- Ability to view results history for any period for which calculations were performed.
Primary users of this software package include grid companies, municipal and industrial entities, energy audit and expert bureaus, as well as oil and gas corporations. RTP 3 software has been installed and is currently in active use on 1450 workstations at 285 companies and entities.
